With so many Australian potters visiting Jingdezhen we are faced with an ethical dilemma about using the skills and resources of other, cheaper countries to fulfill our creative vision. This issue emerged in several of the panel discussions and was addressed by many of the keynote speakers.
Robyn Phelan talking on her residency at Jingdezhen. To see the process that a mature artist has undertaken emotionally ,physically and creatively is invaluable. While it is essential for us as artists to have the public persona when engaging with the world of commerce it is really important, especially to emerging artists to see a rounded picture of a creative life.

The tender and beautiful drawing on the interior of Merran Esson's piece.

Saturday

The feeding frenzy around Jackson Li's brushes- they are worth it!

Tania Rollond showed the crowd how to use things you will find in any art supplies store , conte crayons, oil pastels and chinese brush pens to create line and volumeon a two dimensional surface.

There was a big trade display, Max Walker from Walkers clay, Northcote pottery and Clayworks were all there to talk technology and new tools!
Vicki Grima editor of the Journal of Australian Ceramics a dynamic exciting woman and wonderful artists has created the edition to end all editions with her latest issue of The Journal of Australian Ceramics. Her oeuvre encompasses a series of sculptural work inspired by her daughter Heidi, functional ware, and doorbells and sound objects. She says....
"Using porcelain I love to make sentimental objects that are rich in detail, playful and familiar.

The common thread throughout my work is a connection to my own personal history. Having grown up with my mother who is a piano teacher, our home was filled with wonderful music. In 1997, with a fascination of musical instruments of all kinds I felt compelled to make a series of sound instruments. Using combinations of porcelain, metal, wood and found components these instruments explored the possibilities of sound through ceramic media in a way that encourages audience interaction on an audio, tactile and visual level. The principal aim was to create cast ceramic forms that were capable of generating sound, and which, through their aesthetic and textural quality, invited an intimate tactile response. She uses line in a loose gestural way which accentuates the soft form and also the very nature of creation of the pot.
The three "meager" elements, terracotta clay, white slip and clear glaze combine with the movement of the artists body and hands to create these powerful statements on the physical world. One thing I really admire about Jane Sawyer's work is that despite their abstract, sculptural quality these pots retain their original purpose by being usable tableware. In this way Sawyer’s pots are using form and brushwork to draw attention to the process of making but also in their tactility seduce the user to contemplate the process of using the pot.

Revel in the tactile joy of Sawyer's process in this film.........

See Jane Sawyer's work as part of a group show "Tablewares – an international collection"

This exhibition curated by Prue Venables and Gwyn Hansen Pigott promises to be fabulous with works by A great bunch of internationsl Clive Bowen , Takeshi Yasuda , Wally Keeler,
Richard Batterham, Jeff Oestreich, Linda Christianson, Chris Weaver and nine Australian artists.

“This is a selection of makers whose work excites us by its energy, inventiveness, and craftsmanship. One day Kenji decided to try his hand at slip casting, and made the little people as a bit of an experiment and a bit of fun. When Mel saw them, she couldn’t resist finding them a little something to wear, and created their outfits using scraps of decals she had in the studio. The Little People were born!

Kenji and Mel began photographing them in all kinds of places and scenarios, and documenting their adventures on the blog Sandwich Mountain. From July 10th to 26th the whole gang will be at Object Gallery. They’ll be making regular forays out into old Sydney Town and around the conference venues, so keep your eyes out for them. These evocative forms nag at the edge of Australian identity with their echoes and resonances of tanks, rusted cars and rural junk. Merran's work encompasses the domestic, industrial and rural landscape juxtaposing form and rich, layered surface.

I find it interesting that these works evoke country Australia so strongly yet the colours and glazed surface retain links to the humid coastal strip. Everything in this work leads to water. The corrugations of the tank like forms and almost rusted glazed surface remind the viewer of the constant search for this precious commodity in rural Australia at the same time as the blues and greens of the glazes and richness of the pallete remind one of the ocean.

LYNDA DRAPER, MERRAN ESSON & FIONA MURPHY
When:
07.07.2009 - 25.07.2009
Where:
Stella Downer Fine Art - Waterloo, Sydney

Merran Esson is also the head of the organizing committee for the Australian Ceramics Triennale and has spent many hours gathering information, contacting artists (which is a bit like herding kittens) and planning for the extravaganza!

The Many Facets of Woodfiring Academic Owen Rye

Owen Rye is an Australian ceramicist and has worked in many aspects of ceramics including archaeology, teaching postgraduate students, making and exhibiting woodfired work internationally, delivering workshops in Australia and the USA on woodfiring, curating Australian survey exhibitions, organising conferences, and writing books and articles for many ceramics magazines in Australia, England, Germany, and USA. Fraser's vessels encompass both the delicate and the muscular with their strongly thrown forms and intricate, sometimes gold encrusted surfaces. References to history, nature and a material sensuality combine in these intriguing vessels where examination draws you into the surface, across the the form revealing layers of colour and texture, the sense of hidden mystery about to be revealled nagging at the edge of conciousness, then slipping away through sheer delight in the object.

"While viewing her work it is too simplistic to attribute the artist's motivation to the mimicking of age-encrusted surfaces. Her surfaces - colour and texture - are new; a deliberate refinement based on the artist's unique aesthetic judgement. Her colours and textures have no reference point, no equivalent in ancient ceramics. In this sense her work is contemporary. Traditionally "The Bush" (as everywhere not in the city is known) has been a place of harsh landscapes and heroic sweaty, masculine types subduing or being beaten down by the unrelenting climate and isolation. Contemporary ceramicists are articulating the bush as a lyrical, poetic place of stillness, contemplation and subtlety.

Tania Rollond has been exploring landscape and memory for many years in her beautiful ceramics. Her latest work is a series of vessels. They reference human/nature interaction in their poetic titles such as "Bottle - An Autumn Crossing" and "Bottle - Rain & Light, Coming and Going" Rollond abstracts the landscape creating a meditation on our place in the land. This work is like a membrane, a conduit between culture and nature. Through Rollond's vessels the bush is redefined as a place of inspiration, and mystery not the be subdued or fought against but to be marvelled at. Rollond says that her work "do(es) not directly imitate nature, but parallel(s) its dynamics."

Tania Rollond is speaking and demonstrating at the Australian Ceramics
Triennale 16th -20th of July.

Her work is part of a group exhibition "Conversations"
Conversations

When:

    15.07.2009 - 15.08.2009

Where:

               Sabbia Gallery - Surry Hills, Sydney

Meet the Speakers- Kim Won Seok

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 206px; height: 341px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/SihJhFt3n4I/AAAAAAAABTw/SuwB53BMAGg/s400/won_seon_kim2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343601790694170498" />
Kim Won Seok is a professor at Kongju National University,(actually he is not a professor at the kongju university see here) South Korea, and will be speaking at the Australian Ceramics Triennale on contemporary Korean ceramics.

Kim Won Seok's gestural contempoary vessels reference tradition korean Punchong ware.
"In conversation with Kim it becomes apparent that an understanding of Korean ceramic history is fundamental to understanding his work. It provides the keys to its meaning. He has chosen, using a modern context, to draw upon his cultural traditions, rich with historical resonance, to provide the meaning in his own work and to build up artifacts that function on many levels. Won Seok Kim uses the dark claybody and celadon glazes that characterised Korean wares of the 15th century and, in particular, his work makes its strongest reference to the style of work called punch'ong. In doing this he has taken the turning point in Korea's history, a crossroad between two dynasties, two religions and two approaches to the potters' art as his starting point. Her playful assemblages and installations explore "Ceramics, Sculpture, Painting, Performance art, mixed media and post-medium theory, Installation art, film and video, culinary and food history, wunderkammern, botany." (from the University of Colorado website where Dickey is an associate professor.)

Dickey's work evokes a sense of wonder and playfulness seen in the best of post-modernism. Her sculptural gardens engage the viewer on many levels from pure, aesthetic pleasure through to the metaphysical, religous and social semiotics of gardens and food. Dickey says "I've always been intrigued by the language of objects, by their aspects of intimacy in everyday life. (Clay) is the stuff of the earth. Once it is fired, it becomes a cultural object. We interpret cultures through their ceramic objects. It's permanent and impermanent, and that also could be the garden we're talking about."(from "The Rocky Mountain News" June 14 2007)

She says:
“As an artist I want to be a role model in believing in what you do and working hard at it,” she says. It is a message she hopes to send not only to her students but also her own children. “That’s what we should all be doing in life: Finding moments of great joy.”
This is from an interesting article written on Dickey for "Denver Woman "magazine.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 257px; height: 161px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Shx1Y3H8V5I/AAAAAAAABQo/g0IcmYDi6NY/s400/dickey2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340272328129140626" />

Kim Dickey speaking at the Australian Ceramics Triennale on Friday the 17th of July, during the morning session.

A view from the studio with- Simon Reece

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/ShxuwqePcuI/AAAAAAAABQY/xSmEvhqXECs/s400/simon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340265040468472546" />

here's a little baby one two three,
stands at the backdoor what does he see?
PEEPO!
he see his daddy making cups,
very few leaves on the tree,wondering what we'll do together once the clock strikes three.

apologies to the Ahlbergs'
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Shxua4m0R0I/AAAAAAAABQQ/6Ouyv9AbjzQ/s400/shino-cups.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340264666305414978" />
Simon Reece is an Australian ceramicist based in the Blue Mountains behind Sydney. I intend to explore the idea that all things in nature, including mountains and rocks, inanimate objects and natural phenomena are imbued with a living soul. They are nicely weighted and the perfect size for a double expresso. is one of the speakers at the Australian Ceramics Triennale. I have seen Jiangsheng speak a couple of times and he is an inspiring, poetic and powerful speaker. Jiangsheng is the founder of the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute in Jingdezhen , China.

"Sanbao began as a dream of Jackson Li of Jingdezhen and Wayne Higby of Alfred University, USA back in the mid-1990's. They envisioned an international ceramic art center located in China, that would provide the opportunity to the international arts and crafts community to explore and exchange the culture, arts and crafts of China.

The concept of a first international ceramic art center in China led to the search for a suitable site on the outskirts of Jingdezhen, long the world center of porcelain production and the origin of the best porcelain artifacts in history.

The Sanbao Valley had for countless centuries been the source of Chinastone for the studios of Jingdezhen and was dotted with numerous old water-powered hammer mills for crushing the stone. A group of farm houses and an adobe building were chosen as the site for the future art center."
From the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute Website.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 318px; height: 171px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/ShCXuiat2JI/AAAAAAAABOI/nqsB8CVJFdE/s400/3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336932384202676370" />
Jiangsheng Li (also known as Jackson Li) is also a renowned brush maker and will be doing a brushmaking demonstration at the Triennale. I wonder if he’s a married swan, a gay swan, a promiscuous or chaste swan, or a busy swan with no time for swan love. The image is looking out of the studio onto the side street which leads onto the main road that goes over the story bridge into town. It looks quiet in this pic but its noisy always which makes a good soundscape for making a swan in a pond bearing gifts of flowers and a song for his beloved, whose identity needs researched. “
Pru Morrison's words and view..... May 2009

This is an image from Pru Morrison's studio. Her work is a detailed melange of slip-casting, with incised and carved decoration incorporating funny and subversive images and text. Invited international ceramic artists from China, Taiwan, Korea and America will also be represented.

For up-to-date information about all the shows, visit the Australian Ceramics Triennale website’s EXHIBITIONS section."
All information on exhibitions has been compiled by Julie Bartholemew.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/SgdR8n-3qoI/AAAAAAAABMw/PyKELl4VcvQ/s400/c-c26-resize_1238846483.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334322385610320514" />
Victor Greenaway's latest work on exhibition in conjunction with the Australian Ceramics Triennale
"Italy with Soul: Reflections in Form and Figure."
When:
05.06.2009 - 20.07.2009
Where:
Cudgegong Gallery, Gulgong, NSW - Gulgong

Meet the Speakers- Paul Mathieu

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 364px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/SgS2Xs3Q6rI/AAAAAAAABMo/nks-ilwNr1g/s400/Paul_Mathieu_Top_image___Kiss_Bowls__Bottom_image__Flower_Vase__1359_314.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333588377009711794" />
Top image - Kiss Bowls Bottom image- Flower Vase with peaches and bats, after Matisse
“My aim is to reconcile extremes and oppositions, destroy hierarchies and confuse conventions. The author of several books including "Sex Pots: Eroticism in Ceramics", Mathieu uses the ceramic medium to question the hegemony surrounding the visual arts.

He says:
“But if ignorance, prejudice and discrimination are slowly disappearing from our understanding of sexuality, this is not the case yet for ceramics. The prevalent hegemony of the image and the dominant discourses and attitudes in art circles, in academia and in art institutions, where the focus tends to be on the eye over the hand (touch being an unbreakable taboo in art experience), make that difficult if not impossible. Ceramics, it often seems, is quite simply an invisible practice, that does not even deserve consideration.” Sex Pots: Eroticism in Ceramics, New Brunswick, New Jersey, Rutgers University Press; London, A&C Black Publishers, 2003, p. 9.
Paul Mathieu is a keynote speaker at the Australian Ceramics Triennale, the date of his talk is to be advised

Meet the Speakers- Virginia Scotchie

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Sf984twSZPI/AAAAAAAABMA/YFwJipV8LwM/s400/Bronze-Green-Knob-Ring.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332117797626602738" />

"My recent work in ceramic sculpture centers around the abstraction of personal objects that have been given to me by my family members; an old pipe of my father's, a funnel from my mother's kitchen, an old bulb from the family Christmas tree and my childrens toys. A recent object is a handmade wooden tool that was fashioned by my Italian grandfather to plant in his garden. Slender and pointed with a stump of a side handle, this small tool fit the hand of my grandfather and served him well. For me it holds visual intrigue and a connection to my memory of him. The warn, crusty surfaces on many of the pieces are created to give a sense of how time acts to make and unmake a form. I so not wish for this work to be named or lableled, rather it is my intention that through the borrowing and reformation of objects the work might trigger one to look closer and find beauty and intrigue in the humble, ordinary and familiar objects that surround us."

These are the words Virginia Scotchie uses to describe her practice.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Sf99IR5ukcI/AAAAAAAABMI/SG0IV7GFpJM/s400/Slate-Knob-Bowl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332118065027912130" />

This is taken from an article Dr. Lynn Jones Ennis wrote to accompany an exhibition at the North Carolina State College in 2005.
"To be around Scotchie is to witness energy in motion. She processes information on so many levels. Her joyful home is full of color and wonderful objects. Her husband, Peter Lenzo, also is a potter and works in assemblages that are scattered throughout the house. Between them they have three children, three dogs, two cats, and several reptiles.

Scotchie pays attention, and it is this attention that allows her to transform everyday items such as funnels into works of art that invite closer inspection. Sometimes she pokes holes in objects once functional, only to render them unusable in their traditional sense.

Often when she starts a piece, Scotchie isn't sure where it will go. Although she does sketch - she has sketchbooks in every room of her house - she rarely makes something that looks exactly like what she has drawn. And she likes solitude when she is working with the clay form.

Her newly built studio in her back yard is reached by walking through a lovely garden adorned with ceramic spheres, inviting visitors to stop and look. Her former workspace was shared with Lenzo; now they each have a studio. Her sparse space is filled with light and an orderly calmness. Scotchie is a planner. For example, she cuts wooden forms into various shapes, which serve as patterns for her work.
from "Women in Clay" organized by the North Carolina State University Gallery of Art and Design, Dr. Lynn Jones Ennis, Curator of the Collection.2005

Virginia Scotchie is speaking at the Australian Ceramic Triennale on Sunday the 19th of July at 9.00

Meet the Speakers- Takeshi Yasuda

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 362px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/SfenqspuyZI/AAAAAAAABKo/1B-BiRZQc-k/s400/2172137932_1a608cfb02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329913035998808466" />

Takeshi Yasuda is speaking at the Triennale at 9.00 on Saturday the 17th of July.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 270px; height: 343px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/SfemQB9jQQI/AAAAAAAABKg/996YZFbnlEw/s400/takeshi_yasuda_vessel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329911478350987522" />
In his own words here is short history of his amazing and diverse career:
"My name is Takeshi Yasuda. I am a British potter born in Japan where I trained at Mashiko for two years and stayed another eight years as a working potter until moving to the United Kingdom thirty years ago. I have taught in British colleges for over 25 years but never took a full time teaching position. At the moment, I am teaching at Alfred University for a semester. "

This precis is taken from a very interesting letter Takeshi Yasuda wrote in reply to John Britt's assertion that "The Unknown Craftsman is Dead" in April 2008. You can read the whole reply, gentle, funny and probing as it is here
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 302px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Sfel3n-RK8I/AAAAAAAABKQ/h8_D_uVWfTc/s400/Ying-Qing-Bowl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329911059057814466" />
Currently the Director at the Jingdezhen Pottery Workshop in China, Takeshi Yasuda is well known for his unique tableware and his critical survey of European eating habits. This beautiful bowl is typical of his gestural approach to form and throwing. Yasuda's commitment to the ritual and importance of food and vessels in our lives is illustrated in the combination of the oriental "precious" materials (porcelain and celadon) meeting the occidental "precious" of the gold. This form uses gold leaf to subvert the expectation of the formal dinner set decorated in gold set in place throughout western ceramic history. The relaxed tension of the throwing combined with the formal, historical and even religious association of gilding create a vessel that is a lyrical meditation on nexus between creation and the ritual of eating. This pot creates a dialogue between the everyday and philosophical.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 336px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Sfel4cMAvoI/AAAAAAAABKY/breHhCoc5VE/s400/1834_20090401121043.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329911073074101890" />

Meet the Speakers- Marek Cecula

Marek Cecula is a keynote speaker at the Australian Ceramics Triennale. My current work leans towards a more traditionalist approach, as is evidenced by the functional, classical forms and glazes and the extensive use of unrefined materials such as wood ash, rocks and clays, often gathered from the local area."

Dr Moon uses a traditional japanese kickwheel you can see a demonstration of this fascinating ancient technique here:

On Monday 20 July Damon Moon will be appearing as a keynote speaker in the final session of the Australian Ceramics Triennale.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Se50PC4M8UI/AAAAAAAABJg/9x89mKQof0A/s400/page9-1002-full.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5327323211045335362" />

Welcome to the Australian Ceramics Triennale

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 273px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YBtvh6BPCWg/Sev3PYFfjwI/AAAAAAAABIw/EUN4R_4Y0Po/s400/Bronwyn+Kemp+for+web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326622827831332610" />
Welcome to the Australian Ceramics Triennale Blog!

The wonderful pots in our header are made by Australian potter Bronwyn Kemp.
"These vessels are meditations on on distant horizons and landscapes rendered vague and hazy by heat and light.
